Types of glass railing mounting — point clamps, profiles, mini posts. Which glass to choose for staircases and open balconies, standards and prices.
A glass railing is the most striking way to make a staircase, balcony or terrace safe: it blocks neither light nor the view and visually lightens the structure. Let's break down how to choose the mounting system and the glass so the railing lasts for decades.
**1. Point mounting (spiders, clamps)** The glass is fixed to the load-bearing surface with point clamps made of stainless steel. The railing looks maximally "weightless" — like a frameless glass wall. The most popular choice for private-house staircases and terraces. Price — from ₽17,000 per linear meter.
**2. Clamp profile** The glass slides into an aluminum U-shaped profile fixed to the edge. Not a single visible fixing point, a clean line of light along the entire length. Often used in offices, shopping centers and modern interiors. From ₽18,000/l.m.
**3. Mini posts (glass + handrail)** Compact stainless steel posts support the glass from below, with a handrail on top. The classic for balconies and outdoor staircases: the post additionally protects against lateral loads. From ₽17,500/l.m.
Only **tempered 8–12 mm** or **laminated (triplex)**. For indoor staircases, tempered 10 mm glass is sufficient. For open balconies and outdoor railings we recommend 8+8 laminated: two sheets of glass with an interlayer — if it breaks, the fragments stay on the film.
Important: the glass edges must be polished — a ground edge develops micro-cracks over time, especially outdoors.
By the standards for staircase railings in private houses, a handrail is advisable if the height is more than one flight and there are children in the house. A stainless steel AISI 304 or wooden handrail is mounted to the glass with point holders and does not spoil the "weightlessness" of the structure.
Approximately (Moscow region): point mounting — from ₽17,000/l.m., clamp profile — from ₽18,000/l.m., mini posts — from ₽17,500/l.m. The final price depends on the railing height, glass type and staircase configuration. The quote is made after a free measurement.
